The Significance of 108


Why 108?

Throughout history 108 has multi-dimensional meaning and carries spiritual significance in various cultures. 

Let’s look at this magical number 108...



  • 108 is the number of beads on a Yoga Mala
  • 108 is the number of names for Shiva
  • 108 is the number of names given to different Hindu deities, recital of these names is counted on the 108  Yoga mala
  • 108 is the number of names for Buddha
  • 108 is the number of beads on a Catholic rosary
  • 108 is 12 x 9, the number of vinyasas in a sun salutation
  • 108 energy Lines, Nadis radiate out from the heart centre to all parts of the subtle body
  • 108 is number of sounds in Sanskrit language, 54 masculine (Shiva) and 54 feminine Shakti
  • In astrology there are 12 houses and 9 planets 12 x 9 = 108
  • The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
  • The distance from the Sun and the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun
  • The average distance of the Moon from the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Moon


Sri K. Pattabhi Jois called Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) a yoga mala, after the prayer beads. 

There are 108 beads on every strand. Each completed Vinyasa sequence becomes a bead, weaved together when performed 108 times. This brings the meditation to motion with divine intent through Surya Namaskar, where the body becomes an embodied prayer for the highest good.
